REBECCA SMITH
I weave art on a loom, much as a potter shapes clay on wheel. The loom holds my threads under tension while I explore ways to integrate the threads into a beautiful composition. I am fascinated with light and shadow, and so I seek ways to pair density with transparency. My goal is to create textiles that engage the environment by being semi-transparent rather than presenting an opaque barrier. I want to invite the viewer to see into and through the weaving, easing the distinction between foreground and background, or between positive and negative space. I draw upon varied textile modalities—lace weave, ondulé, ikat dyeing—often combined with figurative and geometric pattern inlay.
